We dramatically improved MACD by transforming the histogram (the difference between MACD line and signal line) into a trend-phase detection indicator based on ATR thresholds:
- In an uptrend, the histogram must drop below the lower ATR threshold before switching to a downtrend.
- In a downtrend, the histogram must rise above the upper ATR threshold before switching to an uptrend.
This makes trend identification clearer, faster, and more objective – especially during fast intraday conditions.

This NinjaTrader MACD indicator includes an exceptional capability: trend slowdown detection, based on the number of histogram bars you configure.
With the default setting of 3 bars:
- 3 consecutive positive decreasing bars = uptrend slowdown
- 3 consecutive negative decreasing bars = downtrend slowdown
Slowdowns appear as dot markers, and zero-crossovers are marked with arrow symbols (↑↓) for instant visual clarity.
